Teahaus; Sarah Lawrence College
I took this picture with a crappy little digital camera on the last day of my first semester at Sarah Lawrence. The students were already supposed to have evacuated their dorms for winter break, but a massive blizzard hit New York, and so the school extended its deadline. My home was less than an hour away from campus, but I was waiting for my dad to drive in from the city and pick me up on his way back. It should’ve taken him 20 minutes to get from his office to the college, but in the traffic from the storm, it took him seven hours. Of the students left behind awaiting updates on cancelled flights and cars that wouldn’t budge, a small group camped out together in the Teahaus. For those unfamiliar with Sarah Lawrence, the Teahaus is the perfect item to cite when someone asks, “So, is your campus really like Hogwarts?” It is. And the Teahaus is one of the most magical places on its grounds. I knew that as I sank into the corner of a huge armchair in that tiny stone cabin, listening to gritty tunes underscore the chatter of older kids sorting out their Chinese food orders. And I snapped this picture. And whenever I look at it, it takes me right back there. To Sarah Lawrence, to new beginnings, to the smell of the dusty records, piped heat, and spiced tea. Sometimes I just need to go back there for a moment. I am back there now.
