Not that my opinion counts for much, but this was the moment I decided she deserved all the awards. Here’s why:
When Lavinia is given the news about Matthew, Mary’s instinct is to react as if she were Matthew’s intended, because she loves him with her entire body and soul — as more than a cousin, that is. She not only processes the news for Lavinia, but also for herself and for her beloved, Matthew, understanding that if by any miracle she were to end up with Matthew, they would not be able to have children. But, no. That line of thinking is absurd and inconsiderate. Matthew belongs to Lavinia. Instead, she has to hold back because it would be inappropriate for her to react with greater shock than Matthew’s own fiancee. For this reason, she is careful to note Lavinia’s reaction. Not only does she have to keep her own emotions in check but she also has to prepare to comfort Lavinia as a friend, meanwhile, inside, she is freaking the fuck out. While Julian Fellowes’ brilliant writing makes these complexities inherent in the plot, ALL OF THE ABOVE and more comes across Mary’s face in less than 5 seconds. I felt her pain so distinctly.
